The main exhibition venue of the National Museum of Lithuania focuses on the history of Lithuania from the formation of the state to the 20th century and Lithuanian ethnic culture.

In the first hall, the visitors can get acquainted with the history of the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities, whose museological tradition is continued by the National Museum of Lithuania. The exhibition of the history of early Lithuania in the second hall reflects the turbulent time of the flourishing and fall of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the formation of the state in the 13th century to its decline in 1795, and the social development of the Lithuanian state in this period.

The exhibition titled “Lithuania under Tsarist Rule” presents the nineteenth-century history of Lithuania – a history of an occupied country and an oppressed nation. However, it was also the period of resistance and liberation struggle, and the period of the building and modernization of the nation, which ended in the proclamation of the independent state of Lithuania on 16 February 1918.

Other halls contain exhibits related to Lithuanian ethnic culture – traditional culture of Lithuanian peasants, folk art and cross crafting from the 18th to the first half of the 20th century. In the exhibition, room interiors of a residential house of Lithuanian peasants from the 18th – late 19th century are reconstructed.

Step back in history on your visitat Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum. The museum is in a part of a memorial complex and houses two expositions: Exposition of Occupations and The Ninth Fort.

The Ninth Fort was a part of the defense system of Kaunas Fortress. The fort was set up in 1913. After the First World War the Ninth Fort has never been used as a defensive fortification. In 1924 the Ninth Fort became a division of the Kaunas Hard Labour Prison. In 1940–1941 and 1944–1948 – there was the NKVD (The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs) prison. During the Nazi occupation the Ninth Fort was a site of massacre. From 1941 to 1944 in the Ninth Fort more than 50.000 people of different nations were killed. Most of them were Jewish. In 1958, a decision was made to commemorate the killed people, and a museum was established in the Ninth Fort. In 1984, after almost 18 years of designing and building works, a three-part 32-meter height monument and a distinctive-form museum building were built near the Ninth Fort to commemorate the victims of Holocaust.

National M. K. Ciurlionis Art Museum Entrance Ticket

National M. K. Ciurlionis Art Museum Entrance Ticket - Kaunas, Lithuania

Location: Kaunas, Lithuania

Established in 1921, the M. K ... More info ›

Established in 1921, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art has turned into one of the oldest and largest art museums in Lithuania. It is the best place in Lithuania to become acquainted with the development of Lithuanian and international art history and culture, from ancient times to the present day.

The Museum is primarily dedicated to exhibiting and publicizing the works of the painter and musician M.K. Čiurlionis (1875–1911).

By the versatility of his creative explorations M.K.Ciurlionis can be compared to the Renaissance masters, and he has left a deep mark on all the creative work of Europe in just ten years of his creative path. He wrote about four hundred pieces of music, painted more than three hundred paintings, wrote literature and poetry and experimented in art photography.

The idea to establish an art museum was inspired by the first exhibitions of Lithuanian art (from 1907) and the activities of the Lithuanian art fellowship in early 20th century. In 1921, the Constitutive Assembly (Seimas) passed the M. K. Čiurlionis gallery act. Following a design by architect V. Dubeneckis, the construction of the temporary M. K. Čiurlionis gallery was begun near the Art School. The anniversary exhibition of M. K. Čiurlionis works was held here in 1925.

In 1930, the decision was made to build a new museum (architects V. Dubeneckis, K. Reisonas, K. Kriščiukaitis), to commemorate the 500 year anniversary of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas the Great. The construction works were finished in 1936 and then the temporary M. K. Čiurlionis gallery was reorganized into the Vytautas the Great Museum of Culture.

The Museum held the collection from the Čiurlionis Gallery, the Kaunas City Museum and the State Museum. In 1944, the museum took the name of the M. K. Čiurlionis State Museum of Art, becoming the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in 1997.
