Curonian Spit is an almost 100 km long narrow peninsula, which separates mainland and the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic sea. Since the year 2000 Curonian Spit is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. While mostly known for its drifting sand dunes, pine forests, elks and fine beaches, Curonian Spit also offers rich cultural heritage of traditional fishermen’s way of life, ethnic group Curonians (Kuršiai) and East Prussian history.

Kayaking route stretches along the coastline of nature reserve, which is only accessible by water. Discover majestic sand dunes while paddling on the safe and shallow waters of the Curonian Lagoon, watch “fisherman’s best friends” cormorants fishing on the lagoon and listen to the stories from the local guide.

This tour is safe and suitable for beginners. Swimming skills are required and previous paddling experience is not necessary. However we might change our route depending on weather conditions.

The guide will take pictures during the tour and send photos to you afterwards so you don’t need to risk your camera on the water.

Please dress according to the weather conditions and use outdoor clothing including a rain jacket and light footwear if you have a chance. It is recommended to take an extra set of clothes to change after the tour. You can keep them in the dry bags and kayak hatches while paddling.

Nemunas is the largest river in Lithuania, which at its mouth splits in to several channels  and enters Curonian Lagoon. The only inhabited island Rusnė is located in the middle of the delta. This area is a bird paradise, where you can often see sea eagle, common crane, white stork among many other species. Paddling in the protected area provides you a chance to get closer to the local wildlife. One of Europe’s largest and oldest ornithological station is located in Ventė. Cultural heritage can be found while exploring old water pumping station (1907), lighthouses in Uostadvaris and Ventė as well as unique Mingė village.

The route passes Nemunas river, several channels, Kniaupas bay and gives you an impression of paddling on open waters of Curonian Lagoon. Enjoy this tranquil paddling trip with a combination of nature areas and cultural background.

Begin your journey with a ferry ride into Smiltyne, one of the most beautiful places in Lithuania, named “the corner of the world” by tourists. Make a short stop in the year-round beauty of Juodkrante. Visit Nida, one of the oldest settlements in Kursiu Nerija, founded in 1429. Discover the tranquillity, distinctive natural beauty, spectacular fishing lodges, and stylish villas that fascinate visitors to Nida. Journey to Witch Mountain, and see one of Juodkrante’s most stunning sand dunes. Visit the village of Nida, founded in 1676. One of Kursiu Nerija’s best-known fishing areas, Nida is famous for its impressive Great Dune, where German writer Thomas Mann spent his summers. Admire the stylish architecture of the lodges, along with their bright décor, carvings, and nearby ancient fishing boats. See the well-preserved headstones in the old cemetery. Visit the semi-shifting dune of Parnidis and its solar clock, one of Kursiu Nerija’s most popular sites. It stands an impressive 170 feet (52 meters) high, although it used to stand 55 feet (17 meters) higher. You can alo take in views of the top of the dune from the observation deck.

Next, drop into the Thomas Mann Memorial Museum. The famous writer was fascinated by the beauty of the lagoon and fishing village and built a vacation home here in 1930. Since 1995, visitors have flocked to the home-turned-museum and cultural center, which hosts concerts and poetry readings. Finally, visit the Amber Gallery and Museum in Nida. Located inside an old fisherman's house since 1993, it welcomes visitors with guard-like wooden amulets from Juodkrantė's Treasure. See all 434 original-sized amulets, and learn about their meanings. Birute’s hill. This is the highest dune on the beach in Palanga. The Bridge of Palanga and J.Basanavicius Street.
