This place is the best. We strongly recommend Curonian Spit to ourselves and we do recommend it for You. It is a unique narrow piece of land squeezed between the Baltic sea and the Curonian lagoon. Once it was surrounded by fisherman villages that now became picturesque resorts. Expect fine sand dunes, pine forests, plenty of water and horizons. Expect wilderness accustomed to tourism with a touch of local smoky culinary tradition.
- Smoked fish from the sea with local fisherman
- A walk around Sand Dunes
- A visit of beautiful towns of Juodkrante and Nida
Since we know the time is not your partner, there will be plenty of a road, which is beautiful once we cross a ferry to the spit (3h drive from Vilnius). There is only one road and we picked out the most picturesque and must see agenda that can fit in a day.
In Juodkrante we will stop for a “Hill of witches” that describes ancient folk traditions and say “Hi” to cormorants who have settled a colony in a forest. Afterwards a sight worth a little climb – Vecekrug dune – a higher hill that opes the sights.
After sighting, it’s time for the other senses and we will stop at a local fisherman who will have some fish that was smoked that day a few hours ago – life rarely gets better than this. It is a tradition of every local visitor to eat that Curonian smoked fish and getting it at fisherman is an experience in itself.
We will continue to the most western town of Lithuania – Nida – which is a best place on earth for many Lithuanians (not all, of course). Here we will check the big dune, lighthouse, have a stroll by the lagoon, and check some local architectural sights.
The purpose of this trip will be to show You the best Lithuania has to offer. Believe it, or not – many foreigners come back for longer for this Curonian life.
